COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Gabrielle, a resident of Gateway Family, turned her life around after she called 311 for help when she was homeless and battling addiction—now she is sober, has full custody of her 1-year-old, and is preparing to move into her own apartment as the shelter prepares to expand its services for 50 families in Albuquerque.  The Paper.

CULTURE NEWS

  • The new Young Adult Fiction novel In the Company of Wolves follows Jaime, a boy who moves from New York to a small town outside Albuquerque after his father died in the Vietnam war. He learns to ride a horse and meets a special wolf named Graybeard — a journey brought to life by author Antonio Farias after a long writing career.  KUNM
  • UNM celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month with the third Annual Lobos y Lowriders event at Cornell Mall where hundreds of students and community members enjoyed lowrider displays, music and food. Lowrider legend Joe Hernandez—creator of the iconic Lowrider Man logo—appeared to share his experience and honor the cultural roots of the community.  University of New Mexico
  • TEDxABQ 2025 will take place on Saturday, Sept. 27 at Electric Playhouse at 5201 Ouray Rd NW with five hours of live presentations, interactive installations, and a VIP After Party at 7 p.m.—the event gathers local innovators to explore the theme of Curiosity and revive a historic tradition of idea exchange—co-curators Alex Andrego Adams and Meghan Pickard have designed engaging activities including an AI-hosted 360 stage experience.  The Paper.

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Today, U.S. News and World Report released rankings showing UNM’s School of Engineering is 96th in the nation for undergraduate engineering. UNM has five programs in the top 150 and ranks best among New Mexico universities in key areas.  University of New Mexico

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • FEMA lawyers said they will challenge a judge's order that requires the agency to pay for the emotional loss suffered by Hermits Peak-Calf Canyon Fire victims after the 2022 wildfire. The case has spanned years and now awaits the Solicitor General's final word — a decision that may take a long time.  Source NM
  • The city of Albuquerque is installing a fence along East Central medians near Pennsylvania, Wyoming, and Louisiana to guide pedestrians—this $2.2M safety project will add nearly 200 pedestrian lights, HAWK signals, and lane changes over the next six weeks to reduce traffic risks. Funding comes from automated speed enforcement fines and city money, with completion expected by the end of the year.  KOAT
  • On Sept. 15, the City Council approved $21.8 million from the state to add 183 homeless shelter beds and 204 senior apartments while enforcing strict oversight — weekly reports, trash maps, and detailed operational plans — to ensure funds are spent well. The money will improve services at Gateway Center, the former San Mateo Inn, and a converted Ramada Inn as Albuquerque works to help more people.  The Paper.
  • Staff from the Bureau of Land Management and New Mexico’s State Land Office presented plans Monday night in Las Cruces regarding a national monument land swap—this plan will change how public lands are managed.  Albuquerque Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • The New Mexico Department of Health data shows unintended falls are the leading cause of injury-related deaths for those 65 and older with fall death rates dropping 41% from 2019 to 2023. Hospitalizations increased 6% & experts urge older people to improve home safety and check their health habits.  KOAT
  • On September 19, Free Flow NM and Umoja ABQ launched Albuquerque’s first Period Cupboard at 211 Jefferson St NE to offer free menstrual products and support; it is open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12:00 to 3:30 p.m. and both groups are seeking additional funding to expand services—helping local women gain independence.  The Paper.
