EDUCATION NEWS

  • UNM’s School of Engineering announced Regents’ and Dean’s Excellence Professors and Lecturers, naming faculty who have shown excellence in teaching, research and leadership—awarding them with title distinctions and annual stipends for three-year terms. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A new state analysis found that NM roads are in the worst shape in recent history—interstate ratings fell from 90% in 2023 to 84% and non-interstate roads dropped to 70%—and state experts worry that lower revenue from taxes will limit needed repairs. Contractors warn that limited funds could stall projects and risk 61,000 jobs while state officials will ask for more money during a special session in October.  KUNM

HEALTH NEWS

  • U.S. Sen. Martin Heinrich said on Friday in Las Cruces that if the GOP-led funding bill passes, ACA premium tax credits will end and health insurance premiums for thousands of New Mexicans could rise by $300 to $500 monthly. Health care groups warned the cuts could force hospitals and clinics to limit services or close—undermining care and financial stability in the state.  Source NM
  • UNM Hospital unveiled its new $842 million critical care tower expansion yesterday—built to serve more patients—at a ribbon-cutting ceremony led by UNM Health System CEO Dr. Mike Richards, who said the project is very important for the region.  Albuquerque Journal
  • Health advocates told lawmakers on Thursday that extreme heat is hurting Indigenous people’s well-being and cultural traditions. Melissa E. Riley, a Mescalero Apache board member for Healthy Climate New Mexico living in Laguna Pueblo, said the lack of cooling systems and shrinking water sources is making it harder for community members to join their early morning dances — putting many at risk.  KUNM
