COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Mountain West Fall Fest 2025 will bring craft beer, live music — and family activities to Bernalillo on Saturday, Oct. 4 from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Loretto Park, featuring local breweries, food vendors and a lineup of bands playing country, rock, and traditional Mexican music.  Sandoval Signpost
  • City leaders finalized a $7.7 million deal on nearly 13 acres between Coors Boulevard and St. Joseph's Drive to build the Kent Sanchez indoor sports facility on Albuquerque’s Westside. The facility will offer 8 basketball courts, 16 volleyball courts and space for other sports—an investment that honors late councilor Ken Sanchez and aims to boost youth sports and economic growth.  KOAT
  • The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta will begin on Saturday with new safety measures — increased law enforcement presence and faster connectivity — to help manage the event, which is expected to draw 900,000 visitors over nine days. Officials also noted upgrades such as expanded parking and new restrooms to improve the visitor experience.  KOAT

CULTURE NEWS

  • The theater at the Anderson Abruzzo Albuquerque International Balloon Museum will reopen on Saturday, Oct. 4 to debut the film Above and Beyond: A Bloom Museum Story — marking its 20th anniversary after renovations that followed closures from COVID and technical issues. It will also show additional films during the 53rd Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta.  KOAT
  • This week, Albuquerque hosts cultural events—Albuquerque Little Theatre stages the play Manahatta about Lenape history starting Friday at 7:30 p.m., D.L. Hughley headlines his stand-up show at Quezada’s Comedy Club on Friday and Saturday, and the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center holds the American Indian Arts Festival on Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.  The Paper.
  • Fabián García, known as the father of the New Mexican food industry, developed the first dependable chile pod and transformed farming in New Mexico—he later led agricultural research at New Mexico A&M and used his estate to fund affordable housing for Hispanic students.  KOAT

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A new study shows that New Mexico is the cheapest state for moving costs with a $1,200 charge to move an average three-bedroom home—data from professional movers across the nation found Vermont costs $3,000. More than 30 million Americans are expected to move over the next year, and the report sheds light on national trends that affect local residents.  KOAT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • University College’s Greenberg Research Group, led by Ph.D. chemist Jake Greenberg, lets first-year UNM students gain lab research experience in biology and chemistry. The lab supports diverse projects—helping students start their journey to change the world from the beginning.  University of New Mexico

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The government shutdown—now 20 hours in—resulted from the president and Congress failing to reach a funding agreement Tuesday and has put over 20,000 federal workers at risk of furloughs, while essential staff such as health care workers, law enforcement, and TSA screeners continue working. Non-essential employees, including those at national parks like White Sands and Carlsbad Caverns, may seek unemployment benefits even as Social Security checks and SNAP benefits remain in place.  KOAT
  • Lawmakers introduced 11 bills in a special session on Wednesday — six of which are likely to die — as discussions focused on using record savings to fund rural hospitals and health programs. Senate Majority Leader Peter Wirth said the session will finish today with only bills within a narrow scope considered.  Source NM
  • Albuquerque officials are proposing the city's first major traffic code overhaul in 50 years to improve safety for cyclists and pedestrians; the plan, spurred by recent bike-related deaths, includes stronger driver requirements, clearer crosswalk rules, and better trail protections as part of the Vision Zero initiative—Mayor Tim Keller says the measure is about saving lives.  KOAT
