Good morning, Albuquerque. Here's your local news at a glance for Monday, the 6th of October.

CULTURE NEWS

  • On Sept 30, historians Amber Lane and Portia Vescio led visitors through a photographic display of UNM's past using images from their book University of New Mexico, which was released in August with help from UNM's Center for Southwest Research and Special Collections. The book shows key campus milestones including Pueblo architecture and the university’s early push in health sciences.  New Mexico Daily Lobo
  • UNM hosted the Silent Lights disco at University Stadium on Oct. 2 as construction near the Humanities building moved the event from Smith Plaza to a larger, unfenced space. Students danced while listening to six DJs through headphones—clear bag rules were followed and free jerseys were given to the first 60 students.  New Mexico Daily Lobo

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Oct. 23, the University of New Mexico College of Education and Human Sciences will host Lobos @ APS Day as staff, faculty, and administrators shadow teachers, counselors, and support staff at APS to learn about the daily challenges in Albuquerque public schools — the event will end with a group reception at the Berna Facio Professional Development Center.  University of New Mexico
  • On Oct. 3, about 200 UNM graduate workers picketed at Yale Boulevard and Las Lomas Road—stopping traffic and rerouting shuttles as they secured a 6% raise and earned union protections for international workers. They later met with the university administration to renegotiate healthcare benefits in spring 2027—gaining support from UNM faculty and undergraduates.  New Mexico Daily Lobo
  • UNM Main Campus is undergoing four major projects including demolition of the Humanities Building—which will have construction documents ready by September—and new buildings for Fine Arts, a police headquarters, and an ROTC track. Roadwork near the Lomas Parking Structure will finish in mid-October as city projects improve traffic and parking access for everyone.  New Mexico Daily Lobo
  • UNM’s Office of the Vice President for Research has recognized faculty who mentor students through the Faculty Mentored Research Award, honoring professors Jason Moore and Jessica Carey-Webb along with students Ian Hutchinson and Natalie Rovello. Moore’s projects plan future field seasons in Paraguay and Carey-Webb’s guidance helped Rovello secure a Fulbright scholarship—highlighting strong mentorship that advances learning.  University of New Mexico

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Albuquerque mayoral candidates met at two forums on Tuesday, Sept. 30 to discuss crime, homelessness and small business issues ahead of the November 4 election—one forum hosted business owners at a Uptown hotel while the other was set by neighborhood groups at an Old Town hotel. All six candidates attended the first session, with one missing the second due to a family emergency, and early voting begins Tuesday, Oct. 7.  New Mexico Daily Lobo
  • The city of Albuquerque is proposing changes to traffic laws that will require drivers to stop at crosswalks if approved by the city council—this measure is designed to improve pedestrian safety.  Albuquerque Journal

SPORTS NEWS

  • The University of New Mexico women's volleyball team lost to the Wyoming Cowgirls 3-1 on Saturday, Oct. 4 after a hard-fought match where standout plays by Madeleine Miller and Addison France kept the Lobos in contention—though they could not avoid defeat. The team will look to bounce back in their next matchup against San Diego State on Oct. 9.  New Mexico Daily Lobo
  • The Lobos, coming off a 3-1 start, lost 35-28 to San José State after early turnovers—putting them in a 14-point hole that they could not overcome despite a late rally. Coach Jason Eck said the team will work on fundamentals as they prepare to face Boise State on Oct. 11.  New Mexico Daily Lobo
  • The University of New Mexico Lobo Men and Women’s basketball teams held the Lobo Howl event at The Pit on Oct. 4— the first in seven years— to introduce fans to new head coaches Eric Olen and Mike Bradbury and their restructured rosters.
