COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Oct. 7, UNM students, staff, faculty and community members rallied outside Scholes Hall carrying handmade signs and Palestinian flags to mark two years of war in Gaza—marching to Duck Pond while chanting for UNM to divest from weapons manufacturers. Organizer Noelia Mann said the group aims to pressure the University to end its investments in arms companies.  New Mexico Daily Lobo

CULTURE NEWS

  • Sky 7 flew over Balloon Fiesta Park on the final day of the 53rd Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, showing the morning sessions and event preparations. Dozens of vibrant balloons ascended on Sunday and spectators and pilots hoped for a mass ascension after two Saturdays without one — marking a colorful end to the festivities.  KOAT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Africana Studies Department at UNM is launching an online space called Tell Us Your Stories to collect local narratives, including David 'Happy Jack' Jackson’s account from White Oaks, to preserve important Black New Mexican heritage—an effort inspired by concerns over family treasures being censored at the Smithsonian. The project will serve as a lasting archive that the university plans to update regularly to better connect the community with its history.  University of New Mexico

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Local agriculture agencies and livestock producers are watching for screwworms after two cases were reported in northern Mexico in recent weeks - a pest that has hurt livestock and wildlife in the past - and officials plan to set up measures to keep it from spreading.  Albuquerque Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Travelers at Albuquerque International Sunport experienced major delays this past Sunday as the government shutdown reached its 12th day and they urged Washington lawmakers to reopen it to ease the disruptions & airport officials said there were no local TSA issues and advised passengers to check with their airlines for updates.  KOAT
  • On Oct 2, Councilor Nicole Rogers and UNM Sustainability Studies researchers announced a partnership to form an International District Food Policy Council and test ideas to improve fresh food access—efforts include zoning updates, a community kitchen, and a Small Growers Micro Grant Program.  New Mexico Daily Lobo
  • Former Daily Lobo Editor Lily Alexander won her lawsuit after UNM settled on Sept. 4 over her denied public records request by releasing a redacted UNMPD weapons list and agreeing to pay $195,000—$65,000 to her and $130,000 for attorney fees. She said this legal victory teaches her fellow student journalists to trust their instincts.  New Mexico Daily Lobo
  • Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham announced New Mexico’s universal child care initiative last month—she must now recruit 5000 new early childhood workers to expand care access for families.  Albuquerque Journal

SPORTS NEWS

  • The University of New Mexico women’s soccer team beat the Grand Canyon University Antelopes 4-1 on Oct. 9 after a lightning delay—Lobos took the lead early with strong shots and held off the Lopes’ late goal. The win improves UNM’s position in the Mountain West standings as they prepare to host Utah State on Oct. 16.  New Mexico Daily Lobo
  • The Broncos beat the Lobos 41+25 when UNM committed eight penalties and lost the turnover battle, with quarterback Jack Layne fumbling early and throwing two interceptions; this loss marked their third loss of the season.
