COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local bookstores and libraries in Albuquerque are offering book clubs that bring neighbors together to discuss various genres and make new connections. Bookworks and the International District Library host clubs that welcome all newcomers—strengthening Albuquerque’s reading community.  KUNM
  • Two Albuquerque women—Desi Bravo and Hugo Nuñez del Prado—are planning a COVID memorial to honor loved ones who did not get a chance to say goodbye. The project will offer a lasting tribute and a space for community healing.  Albuquerque Journal

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Bosque Brewing filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy last week after accruing millions in liabilities — the local brewer will continue serving pints while it works on a court-approved reorganization plan and keeps its partnership with Marble Brewery.  KUNM

  • A bumper harvest of new books is available this week featuring a memoir by Susan Orlean and a new novel by Adam Johnson among genres like comics journalism, speculative fiction, horror and humor—offering Albuquerque readers a fresh literary selection to explore.  KUNM
  • Margaret Randall, a local poet and activist with archives at the University of New Mexico, discussed her two new books on New Mexico PBS yesterday — Letters From the Edge: Outrider Conversations and More Letters From the Edge — which show creative letters exchanged with people facing tough challenges.  KUNM

EDUCATION NEWS

  • State and district officials reported that Albuquerque students improved reading scores and made slight progress in math while science scores declined.  Albuquerque Journal
  • A University of New Mexico student has organized a scavenger hunt that uses hints from the Instagram account UNM Mystery Person to guide students to find clues and win prizes that include free admission to Meow Wolf, combo meals and custards from Freddy’s, and a $10 Dions gift card—students can compete individually or in groups as the game will run until the school year ends or until the organizer is identified.  University of New Mexico
  • The Albuquerque Public Schools board race is heating up — the balance of power between two main factions will be decided on the November ballot as local voters choose the direction of future school policy.  Albuquerque Journal
  • UNM will host its 2025 Research and Discovery Week Nov. 6-14 with over 50 events on campus including exhibitions, workshops, and lectures. The Office of the Vice President for Research introduced a new Sched calendar (which lets attendees build a personal schedule) to help visitors plan their week.  University of New Mexico

HEALTH NEWS

  • A new study found New Mexico ranks high for gun suicides among people 70 and older—rural areas face more cases as factors like serious illness, isolation, and loss add to the risk. Data show white men are three times more likely than Black and Latino men to use a gun in these suicides, and experts stress the need for protective measures in an aging population.  KUNM
