- ➤ Albuquerque is offering safe Halloween and Dia de los Muertos events across the city—featuring haunted houses, pumpkin carving, library programs, and pet parades at community centers, parks, and cultural venues. The events are scheduled from Oct. 17 to Nov. 3 and are designed to provide well-lit, supervised celebrations for all ages. KOAT
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Opera Southwest’s new production Dolores tells the life of civil rights advocate Dolores Huerta by weaving protest, family, loss, and hope into music at the National Hispanic Cultural Center — Journal Theatre in Albuquerque. Three performances are scheduled for Sunday, Oct 26 at 2 p.m., Friday, Oct 31 at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, Nov 2 at 2 p.m. — ticket prices range from $29 to $109 with discounts available for students and low-income residents. - ➤ Today the New Mexico Shakespeare Festival launches its 2025 season with a live performance of Coriolanus at North Fourth Art Center at 7:30 p.m. — the festival also schedules Evil Dead: The Musical for Friday at Musical Theatre Southwest and the Espooky Homegirls Mercado for Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon at El Chante: Casa de Cultura —. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ UNM Vice President for Research Ellen Fisher received the John A. Thorton Memorial Award for her work in plasma science—rewarding over 30 years of research and mentorship at UNM. The honor reflects her ongoing efforts to advance plasma chemistries and guide new scientists. University of New Mexico
- ➤ The UNM Grand Challenge Water and Climate Science Communication Fellowship paired 14 undergrad students with research mentors to develop projects on water and climate science—students used various media and each received a $1,000 stipend. Projects were showcased at the spring UROC and the university will accept applications for the Spring 2026 cohort online before Thanksgiving. University of New Mexico
- ➤ New Mexico's Public Education Department reported a 10-point gain in reading scores for students in grades three through eight—marking the highest one-year increase—while math and science scores stayed flat. The department said it will ask legislators for funding to boost math and science programs. KOAT

- ➤ HCA Secretary Kari Armijo said that if the government shutdown continues, 450,000 SNAP recipients will miss nearly $90 million in benefits in November and the USDA may revoke authorization for 1,700 SNAP retailers—food banks are being alerted and notices prepared to help affected residents.
