BUSINESS NEWS

  • The Farmacy, a Nob Hill brunch restaurant, announced Wednesday it will permanently close due to rising costs, lower revenue, and legal fees from a lawsuit by former employees alleging wage theft—though the owner stressed these claims are not proven. He recalled the long history of serving the community and the many memories shared with customers over the years.  KOAT

CULTURE NEWS

  • New Mexico-based author Philip Connors released his book The Mountain Knows the Mountain: A Fire Watch Diary on Sept. 16 and will hold a reading and signing at Bookworks in Albuquerque Tuesday, Oct. 21 at 6 p.m.—his work blends 23 years as a fire lookout with personal poetry and journal notes.  KUNM

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Professor Emily L. Jones (a UNM anthropology professor and director of the Zooarchaeology Lab) published her young adult novel Nahia that mixes archaeological facts with fiction. She is now developing a new class called Archaeology, Science and Imagination for 2026 to 2027 (balancing academic work with creative storytelling) and working on a scholarly book about New Mexico history.  University of New Mexico
  • The University of New Mexico released its 2025 Annual Security and Fire Safety Report in compliance with the Clery Act, detailing crime data from 2022, 2023, and 2024 and safety policies for 2025-2026. The report outlines future measures such as enhanced surveillance—improvements that aim to boost campus security.  University of New Mexico
  • UNM School of Architecture and Planning picked Ashley Lazevnick as the 2025 Outstanding Research Staff Award winner in the New Research Staff Member category; she will get a $1,000 cash prize and be honored at the PI Reception on Nov. 12 at 4 p.m.—her work has helped faculty with research by redesigning the website and starting writing groups.  University of New Mexico

  • Sandoval Economic Alliance will hold a community informational meeting Tuesday from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Cielo Azul Elementary School to discuss Project Ranger, a proposed hypersonic rocket plant by Castelion Corporation near Rio Rancho that could add hundreds of jobs. County resolutions approved Oct. 8 let officials control land from the State Land Office—residents will have a chance to ask questions and share concerns.  Sandoval Signpost

HEALTH NEWS

  • New Mexico officials are monitoring a strong H5N1 bird flu during fall migration—collecting samples from wild bird deaths as federal shutdowns limit routine checks. They urge pet owners to keep animals away from wild bird carcasses to help slow any possible spread.  Source NM
