CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ The Historic Old Town Association will host the third annual Día de los Muertos in Old Town from Oct 25 through Nov 2—featuring community ofrendas built by local students, art installations including sculptures by JOMO, a Family Day screening of Pixar’s Coco, and a Catrina Procession on Nov 1 with additional guided tours to explore the event’s cultural roots. - ➤ Communities across New Mexico are planning Dia de Los Muertos events starting this week to honor loved ones with altars, parades, and music — festivities include a family day in Old Town on Saturday and events with food and art in Santa Fe, Taos, Albuquerque, and Las Cruces through early November. - ➤ Albuquerque’s Fairview Historic Cemetery will host the 4th Annual Victorian Picnic and Scavenger Hunt on Oct 26 from 10 a.m. until dusk at Fairview Memorial Park and a free Day of the Dead Fundraiser on Nov 1 from 6 to 10 p.m. at Painted Lady Bed & Brew—both events will feature a Murder and Mayhem lecture, ghost stories, live tarot readings, and raffle prizes to support ongoing restoration efforts. - ➤ Local band The Ordinary Things formed in 2018 and built a diverse sound with improvised live shows that blend heavy rock and melodic indie influences—members Jackie Chacon, Justin McLauchlin, and Andrew Chacon energize local venues. - ➤ UNM’s Bureau of Business and Economic Research invites local data users to register for its 27th Annual New Mexico Data Users Conference on November 19. - ➤ Performance Santa Fe Foundation has donated money to UNM College of Fine Arts by creating a legacy scholarship and student enrichment fund—these funds will help music, dance and theater students from Santa Fe County and northern New Mexico pay for school and travel for auditions. - ➤ UNM is hosting Professor Jesús A. Fernández as the 2025 Fulbright Mexico Studies Chair through a multi-year agreement with COMEXUS to strengthen academic ties. - ➤ The agency overseeing the nation’s nuclear stockpile furloughed 1,400 workers during a government shutdown that left fewer than 400 employees active, and Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque continued operations using unspent funding.
