CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ The University of New Mexico’s Institute for Medieval Studies will host its 3rd annual Medieval Faire on Halloween, Oct 31, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Johnson Field, where over 30 Albuquerque groups will create a medieval village featuring live sword fighting, music & craft demonstrations and expect up to 1,000 visitors including local students in costume. - ➤ Moulin Rouge! The Musical opened at Popejoy last Tuesday as part of the Broadway in New Mexico series that runs until Oct. 26. The show comes after pandemic delays and features actor Andrew Brewer in his first main role—bringing live theater back to local audiences. KUNM
- ➤ Moulin Rouge! The Musical continues at Popejoy Hall with shows starting today at 7 p.m. and running through Sunday, while local comedians perform themed acts at The Box on Friday at 8:30 p.m.—a CD, vinyl, and book fair runs on Saturday at The Outpost Performance Space from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Paper.
- ➤ On October 13, Benjamin Shendo led his students in a hoop dance performance at the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center—where they introduced themselves in Native languages and celebrated that every day is Indigenous Peoples’ Day—while families enjoyed Navajo tacos, mutton sandwiches, and Native rock and drum performances at Tiguex Park. - ➤ The Mid-Region Council of Governments has launched public events to update its five-year economic plan for job growth in Bernalillo, Valencia, Torrance, and Sandoval counties. Residents and businesses are invited to complete an online survey open until November 14 and attend open houses starting today at the Valencia County Transit Facility — events will also be held in Rio Rancho, Albuquerque and Moriarty. - ➤ Today, the UNM Board of Regents — which hired Isaacson Miller — began a national search for a new university president to succeed Garnett Stokes, who will leave on July 1. The board will form an advisory search committee and hold public forums and campus visits so community members can share their input. KOAT
- ➤ Blonka Mack, founder of the Blonka Movement, brings her financial education tour to Albuquerque high schools today—aiming to teach students about financial freedom, credit, and breaking generational curses. One local school will be chosen for the workshop in the coming days, and the sessions use a Jay-Z album to make finance lessons relatable. KOAT

- ➤ On Tuesday night, hundreds of Rio Rancho residents gathered at an elementary school to question Castelion Corporation about its Project Ranger, a planned $100 million missile facility expected to create at least 300 jobs by year five. The project, set for a 2-mile-wide site that will not process chemicals on-site, raised safety, water contamination, and emergency response concerns while county and tribal officials prepare to decide within the next two weeks—residents want more transparency. - ➤ Traffic delays are expected along Interstate 25 due to planned repairs on Frontage Road in northeast Albuquerque. The project begins at 6 a.m. today and will last 5 to 6 days; southbound lanes, including the off-ramp at MLK Jr. Ave (closed today and Oct. 24), and northbound lanes, including the off-ramp at Lomas Blvd (closed Oct. 27 to Oct. 29), will be affected. - ➤ Federal workers filed 616 unemployment claims since Oct 1 due to a government shutdown that caused payment delays and furloughs, the Department of Workforce Solutions said. Top agencies linked to these claims include the Department of Agriculture, Air Force bases—Cannon, Kirtland, and Holloman, and the Department of Interior, officials noted. KOAT

- ➤ UNMH started a program three years ago to curb rising violence in hospitals that increased during the COVID pandemic. Hospital staff, security, and police worked together—using a new alert system—to report violent patients and help bring charges. KUNM
- ➤ Dr. Abinash Achrekar from KOAT and UNM explained that brain fog—temporary and lasting a few days or weeks—is caused by factors like lack of sleep, stress, poor diet, or medical conditions such as diabetes and depression. - ➤ University of New Mexico engineer Olivia Lanier was awarded a five-year $1.8M NIH grant to study how hormonal changes affect the safety and effectiveness of nanomedicine for conditions like fibroids and ovarian cancer.
