COMMUNITY NEWS

  • PNM is hosting a free community assistance fair today from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Albuquerque High School to help low-income customers pay their electricity bills—representatives from New Mexico Gas Company, Albuquerque Bernalillo County Water Utility Authority, and Comcast/Xfinity will also offer support and community resource information.  KOAT

CULTURE NEWS

  • UNM architecture professor Nora Wendl will launch her book Almost Nothing on Monday, Oct. 27 at Garcia Honda Auditorium and Rainosek Gallery. The event will have a talk from 5 to 6 p.m. and a reception with a book sale and signing from 6 to 7 p.m. as Wendl tells the story of Dr. Edith Farnsworth—who built a glass house from Mies van der Rohe's design.  University of New Mexico

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UNM campus housing improved safety after a survey in October 2023—adding extra cameras, limited dorm entry points and updated electronic access to help students and families feel secure during move-in week. The upgrades also include revised guest registration policies and enhanced emergency contacts for on-campus support.  University of New Mexico
  • UNM graduate student James Chaves earned a prestigious Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute fellowship and will travel to Panama City next May to Aug to study pre-Hispanic fishing strategies along the Santa Maria River—he will collect samples and analyze fish remains at sites such as the Vampire Caves with guidance from advisers Keith Prufer and Ashley Sharpe.  University of New Mexico
  • Starting Nov. 1, New Mexico will offer free child care for all families, but capacity issues mean many spots for babies—especially in rural areas—may not be available; state officials plan to expand centers with a $12.7 million fund and may request an additional $20 million to boost care and worker pay.  New Mexico In Depth

  • Federal and state officials worked to shield 450,000 New Mexicans from losing SNAP benefits due to a $90 million shortfall amid the federal shutdown. U.S. Rep. Melanie Stansbury said an emergency food plan is developing to boost food bank supplies and school meal programs—while state funds remain insufficient for full coverage.  Source NM

  • Drug Take Back Day is happening today in Albuquerque to help residents safely drop off unused medications and reduce risks of addiction and overdose—experts warn that fentanyl, which is up to 100 times stronger than heroin, increases the dangers of misuse.  Albuquerque Journal
  • The New Mexico Coalition of Sexual Assault Programs marks one year of its state’s first 24/7 helpline—receiving over 1,200 inquiries from 25 counties since October 2024—which shows a critical need for support. The organization will hold an anniversary event Monday, Oct. 27th at Tractor Brewing Wells Park and launch its new 'Can I give you my number' campaign.  KUNM
