CULTURE NEWS

  • On Saturday, the annual TJ’s Seed Sack Largest Pumpkin Growing and Carving Contest took place at El Pinto—participants showcased pumpkins of varying sizes and styles in this longstanding event. Local attendees enjoyed the creative competition and looked forward to next year’s contest.  Albuquerque Journal

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Record beef prices are giving ranchers a brief reprieve in New Mexico’s cattle country as low supply follows years of challenges since the pandemic—drought, inflation, tariffs and parasitic worms have thinned herds. Ranchers may only see temporary relief if these supply issues persist.  Albuquerque Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UNM Library Scholarship Day is set for November 12 to showcase faculty research from University Libraries, the Health Sciences Library and Informatics Center and the UNM Law Library. The event will allow library colleagues to learn about the work behind the research.  University of New Mexico
  • Students gathered at Smith Plaza on Tuesday, Oct 21 and Wednesday, Oct 22 to pick up free books and learn about UNM's new open education resources program. Program coordinator Samantha Williams said the event was a success—nearly all books were taken—and organizers plan to make it an annual tradition with support from Friends of the Public Library.  New Mexico Daily Lobo

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Officer Daniel Webster was fatally shot in 2015 during a traffic stop and died after fighting for his life; his widow Michelle remembers him for his fair treatment and will see his legacy honored by a memorial on Oct. 30 & his enduring service is recognized by his community. The Albuquerque Police Department prepares for the event as families and colleagues reflect on his sacrifice.  KOAT
  • New Mexico will offer free child care to all families starting Nov. 1 but a shortage of providers, especially for infants in rural areas, may limit access — state officials reported. They plan to boost capacity with $12.7 million in low-interest loans and request another $20 million for new and upgraded centers.  Source NM
  • On Thursday the city opened another round of grants to help small businesses replace broken windows damaged in vandalism — the program will reimburse repair costs for those affected.  Albuquerque Journal

SPORTS NEWS

  • The UNM women’s soccer team beat Wyoming 1-0 in a Senior Night match on Oct. 23 with forward Alejandra Puerto scoring early and two seniors honored, even though the team was outshot by the opponent. Goalkeeper Alyson Campbell made six key saves—helping the Lobos clinch a playoff berth and set up a road game against San Diego State on Oct. 30.  New Mexico Daily Lobo
  • New Mexico United defeated Rhode Island FC 2-1 at Isotopes Park on Oct. 24 + goalkeeper Kris Shakes made five saves during Black-Out Night, and the team sent off forward Daniel Bruce by awarding him a plaque and hundreds of fan signs as the city declared Oct. 25 Daniel Bruce Day.   • New Mexico scored early and often to secure a 33-14 win over Utah State on Saturday at University Stadium — challenging former head coach Bronco Mendenhall amid an intense game.  Albuquerque Journal
  • UNM’s Women’s Basketball team beat Adams State 81-35 in an exhibition game at The Pit on Oct. 22—junior guard Destinee Hooks led the scoring—and the Lobos will travel to Arlington on Oct.28 for their next game.  New Mexico Daily Lobo
  • New Mexico’s combat-sports community has come together to honor Sergio Chavez, who has long taught and mentored local fighters and athletes. His dedication has made a strong impact on younger generations + connected the community through his shared wisdom.  Albuquerque Journal
