CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Blood Hoard—a young metal band from Albuquerque—has gained fans with fast guitars, loud drums and fun live shows that mix cool costumes with mosh sessions. The band will play shows on November 1 and November 20 at Ren’s Den, promising heavy beats and friendly energy. The Paper.
- ➤ Holy Ghost Campground in the Santa Fe National Forest about 15 miles north of Pecos is known for unsettling tales that include a haunted priest and reports of fatal accidents — Ed and Sara Slather from Duke City Paranormal Research Society have investigated these stories and some local visitors have felt uneasy and advised an open mind for those considering a visit. - ➤ Composer Nicolás Lell Benavides released his album Canto Caló on October 27, a two-part work in Spanish with a four string quartet that he calls a love letter to New Mexico and his heritage (he detailed the project in an interview with Mia Casas on KUNM). KUNM
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Award-winning writer and geographer Caroline Tracey will speak at UNM next month to explore the religious and historical roots of humanitarian work along the border between the US and Mexico as part of the School of Architecture and Planning's Fall 2025 Lecture Series. Her lecture, titled The Theology of Smuggling: A Genealogy of Humanitarianism in the Borderlands, is scheduled for Nov. 3 at 5 p.m. with a reception to follow (at George Pearl Hall's Garcia Honda Auditorium). - ➤ The Albuquerque International Sunport now shows a new exhibit called 'Knowledge Concourse' that presents New Mexico's colleges and universities, including UNM which highlights its research, sports, and care programs near the airport. Acting Aviation Director Manny Manriquez said the display is part of the Dream of Flight project to boost the travel experience—bringing academic pride to the community. University of New Mexico
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The New Mexico Department of Transportation said work on the I-25 Frontage Road between Lomas Blvd and MLK Jr. Ave is causing intermittent northbound lane closures and an off‐ramp shutdown from Monday through Wednesday—drivers should plan for detours and delays. The project runs weekdays from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. and is expected to last five to six working days with potential overnight closures to complete repairs safely. KOAT
- ➤ Food banks and pantries are preparing for a surge in demand as federal SNAP benefits will pause on November 1 due to the government shutdown + a food pantry in Indianapolis already doubled its usual crowd last Saturday. State officials in New Mexico and New York will fast track emergency funds to help keep supplies stocked + experts warn that without federal aid many families may struggle to buy groceries. KOAT
