COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local restaurants in Albuquerque are banding together to offer free meals to children as SNAP funds are predicted to run dry in the coming days — the program will help ensure kids get needed nutrition until additional support is arranged.  Albuquerque Journal

CRIME NEWS

  • The New Mexico Tax and Revenue Department warned residents that scammers are sending fake letters threatening property seizure—residents must verify tax status using official channels and report any suspicious mail.  KOAT

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Albuquerque Museum is presenting Cara and Diego Romero: Tales of Futures Past—an exhibition featuring 40 works that blend traditional Indigenous techniques with modern art. The show opens Nov. 1 at 2 p.m. and runs through Feb. 8—culminating in a Third Thursday event on Nov. 20 from 5 to 7 p.m.  The Paper.
  • UNM Theatre Department is presenting Little Shop of Horrors—a Halloween musical where local students play roles from a singing plant to playful narrators and gain hands-on theater experience. Performances run from Oct. 31 through Nov. 8 with evening shows at 7:30 p.m. and select matinees at 2 p.m., and tickets cost $13.50—$16.50.  The Paper.
  • Wild Hearts Gallery is showing Glass Inspirations, an exhibition of fused and stained glass art by Lisa Chernoff and Nancy and Jon Couch that blends old and new methods. The show opened on Oct. 28 at the gallery (221-B State Highway 165) and will run until Nov. 30, with art events on Nov. 2 and Nov. 8.  Sandoval Signpost

ECONOMY NEWS

  • New Mexico governor's economic development adviser said lawmakers will re-introduce legislation early next year to offer up to $150M in quantum tax credits to keep tech companies in the state. The bill would let companies investing $3M in quantum facilities receive up to 30% of their investment back — a move aimed at spurring local innovation.  Source NM

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UNM Honors College’s Scribendi Volume 39 won the Associated Collegiate Press’ 2025 Pacemaker Award after competing against 14 other publications and was one of four winners, as announced on Oct.18 — a recognition marking its fourth win. The honors students produced this award-winning magazine edition — a milestone as they gear up for a 40th anniversary issue set to release in April.  University of New Mexico
  • The University of New Mexico School of Engineering will host its annual Open House on Nov. 8 from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Centennial Engineering Center’s Stamm Commons, where future students and the public can tour research labs+ learn about student groups and scholarship options.  University of New Mexico
  • On October 19, UNM’s School of Architecture and Planning held a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the renovated Predock Center for Design + Research, marking the end of an eight-year project funded by a $1M renovation. The event honored architect Antoine Predock and his wife Constance DeJong as local leaders, including Mayor Tim Keller, shared their remarks.  University of New Mexico

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The University of New Mexico released its first comprehensive Sustainability Plan that sets a five-year roadmap to reduce the campus environmental footprint—developed after a year of community feedback and research. The plan directs UNM to form a Sustainability Council and a student-led Corps to drive changes in operations and culture.  University of New Mexico
  • A UNM research team led by Professor Zachary Sharp studied horsetail plants along the Rio Grande and found that water moving through them has unusual oxygen isotope levels that may help scientists rebuild past climate details. The team will use these findings to improve climate models in arid regions.  University of New Mexico

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Monday evening, Bernalillo town councilors approved zoning for a new Sandoval County animal shelter at 400 S. Hill Road to help meet the need for increased animal services—officials said the shelter will offer adoptions, medical care and other support. The council also imposed a three-month moratorium on new broadband fiber projects, updated its zoning ordinance and set the next municipal election for March 3.  Sandoval Signpost
  • Federal and state officials are working on an emergency food plan to help 450,000 New Mexicans who risk losing SNAP benefits due to a federal shutdown—officials said the plan will use food banks and school meal programs to fill a shortfall of $90 million while current funds on EBT cards remain available. The state is limited by USDA rules that restrict using its own funds to cover November benefits.  KUNM

HEALTH NEWS

  • A state health official said that New Mexico has enough flu and COVID vaccines for everyone and that providers have been filling orders at schools, doctors, and hospitals since early September. Mobile units are traveling to rural areas to help people get immunized + pharmacies report steady vaccine appointments.  The Paper.
  • About 75,000 New Mexicans buying insurance through the state exchange will see rates rise 35% to 52% starting in January. State funds will help lower income buyers pay as officials noted that rising care costs led companies to lose money last year — urging consumers to prepare for higher premiums.  The Paper.
