ECONOMY NEWS

  • Alarming food prices have strained Albuquerque food banks that are now limiting supplies as more families rely on them, and officials warn that if SNAP benefits stop on November 1, local demand will surge. Food bank directors stress that without federal intervention—such as emergency funding—a severe food assistance crisis may unfold for many families.  KUNM
  • New Mexico farmers warn that ending SNAP benefits on November 1 will be devastating—about one-third of the 4,000 Downtown Growers Market attendees rely on SNAP and Double Up Food Bucks for fresh produce, and many farmers face a steep revenue loss. Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham is expected to detail a state plan on Wednesday as vendors prepare for reduced food access and growing challenges.  Source NM

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Since 1984, ABQ Reads has helped Albuquerque students improve literacy by providing one-on-one tutoring for kindergarten and first-grade students, with volunteers working in three schools. Data show a 25% drop in the lowest reading levels and a 22% rise in proficiency—more than 150 local volunteers support the program, which plans to expand.  KOAT

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • UNM research led by Professor Mark Boslough shows that if a group of space rocks swarms in the Taurid meteor shower, Earth could face a higher risk of a flash explosion in 2032 and 2036. He said labs will use telescopes to study these objects — the work was funded by NASA and national labs to improve planetary defense.  University of New Mexico

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State Attorney General Raúl Torrez and a coalition of 23 AGs sued the USDA on Tuesday—claiming that suspending SNAP benefits will leave more than 450,000 New Mexicans at risk as the shutdown continues—while state officials on Monday pressed for up to $150M in tax credits to boost the emerging quantum computing industry. The state Supreme Court also set a three-day trial starting Dec. 1 to decide whether McKinley County District Attorney Bernadine Martin should be removed from office.  KUNM
  • Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham announced that New Mexico will use $30 million in state funds to deliver food assistance to SNAP participants—benefits will appear on EBT cards starting Nov. 1 and cover about 30% of regular benefits through Nov. 10.  KOAT
  • The Albuquerque Police Department is unveiling a new statue today at 9:30 a.m. at the Police Academy at 5412 Second Street NW to honor fallen APD and K‑9 officers—families, department leaders and community members will join in paying tribute. APD will also announce a separate memorial for officers who died while serving.  KOAT

HEALTH NEWS

  • The FDA approved updated 2025-2026 COVID-19 vaccines for high-risk groups—state guidelines now let medical providers use their judgement to administer the vaccine to anyone who may benefit. Pharmacists, physicians and other providers can give the vaccine without a prescription, and both Medicaid enrollees and privately insured individuals will receive it at no cost.  The Paper.
  • The Paper and New Mexico Political Report cut through vaccine misinformation by checking facts from the CDC and New Mexico Department of Health to explain what this flu and COVID season looks like. They noted that state data shows less than 1% of Bernalillo County emergency visits had respiratory issues as of October 11 and that vaccines remain available for anyone who wants protection this season — following updated federal and state guidelines.  The Paper.
