COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Residents at Skies Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Albuquerque celebrated Halloween on Friday with costumes, masks, and face paint that created a festive spirit among both residents and trick-or-treaters—Laurie, a resident for a year, said the event brought joy to those who rarely have visitors. The activities coordinator said Veterans Day and Thanksgiving events are being planned for future community celebrations.  KOAT

  • Albuquerque city inspectors red-tagged an Italian eatery — cockroaches were found causing a contamination concern and the restaurant must address the issue before reopening.  Albuquerque Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • At UNM's main campus, the Museum of Southwestern Biology holds nearly 5 million specimens that help scientists study how animals and plants change and protect our world—Professor Christopher Witt said new tools like CT scanning and genome sequencing work with decades-old collections to produce 80 studies and 400 publications each year.  University of New Mexico
  • UNM Bookstores has launched a call for UNM students, alumni, faculty, and staff to submit artwork for a 2026 calendar project themed ‘What New Mexico Means to You’—thirteen artists will be chosen, including one for the cover, and entries must be received by November 10. This project will highlight local creativity and New Mexico’s culture.  University of New Mexico
  • Bryan Konesfky, a longtime filmmaker and educator, has opened a retrospective exhibit titled Ladmo at 1415/Alpaca Galleries, which runs until Nov. 7—showing paintings, performance, and video installations that trace his creative journey in Albuquerque.  The Paper.

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State officials announced $30 million in emergency funding today to guarantee that about 460,000 SNAP recipients receive a payment equal to 30% of their typical monthly benefit amid uncertainty over federal cuts. Food banks in Albuquerque and Santa Fe are facing longer lines and dwindling supplies, and recipients will soon receive texts with instructions & support to address rising food demand.  Source NM

HEALTH NEWS

  • The New Mexico Environment Department is asking people who visited Holloman Lake to join a PFAS health survey—officials say the effort will gather key data on public exposure. The survey results will help the agency plan steps to keep residents safe—data will determine if PFAS poses a risk.  Albuquerque Journal
