CULTURE NEWS

  • On Oct. 28, UNM hosted Haunted Hodgin Hall in its oldest building, where alumni, students and faculty experienced four themed scare rooms designed by various student groups to deepen campus ties. Visitors voted for their favorite room for a $500 reward—some enjoyed a free drink from Suenos Coffee and a screening of the classic horror film Them!  New Mexico Daily Lobo
  • On Oct 28, UNM hosted ghost hunter Amy Bruni who talked about her ghost hunting adventures and said she never gives a final answer on ghosts—she also showed old items like a Victorian spirit trumpet and a rare Ed Warren painting to explain the history behind haunted places. The event brought together local believers to learn about different kinds of ghost stories.  New Mexico Daily Lobo
  • New Mexico Arts and Crafts Festival is coming on Saturday, Nov. 8 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the UNM Continuing Education Building—free admission and parking allow visitors to enjoy over 100 local vendors, interactive workshops, face painting and food trucks in a festive holiday setting.  University of New Mexico

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Albuquerque Public Schools opened a new elementary school on Kirtland Airforce Base. Fourth-grade teacher Pamela Prior said she now teaches in modern classrooms after eight years in dated facilities—an upgrade that began two weeks ago.  Albuquerque Journal

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Albuquerque BioPark and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will release 18,000 captive-spawned endangered Rio Grande silvery minnows on Wednesday—fish that have never lived in the wild will begin trying to survive in their natural river habitat.  Albuquerque Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Albuquerque will restripe Broadway from Coal to Lomas — adding a bike lane and speed camera to improve road safety as part of a planned upgrade.  Albuquerque Journal
  • University leaders at UNM warned that the federal shutdown, which began Oct 1, has disrupted federally funded research projects and may delay new awards and panels—guidelines were issued on Sept 29 and Oct 6 to help prepare for these impacts. The shutdown followed partisan disagreements over health care funding and has already affected ongoing research activities.  New Mexico Daily Lobo

SPORTS NEWS

  • For the first time since 2016, UNM Lobo football earned bowl eligibility after beating UNLV Rebels by a score of 40 to 35 on Nov. 1—key plays included a 30 yard touchdown pass and an 84 yard screen run that gave an early lead. The win boosted their record to 6 to 3 as the team heads into a bye week before meeting the Rams on Nov. 15.  New Mexico Daily Lobo
  • After a preseason loss on the road, the Lobos returned to The Pit on Oct. 30 and recorded a 64—54 win over the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks—Antonio Chol scored 20 points early; coach Eric Olen said the team looks forward to their regular season opener on Nov. 5.  New Mexico Daily Lobo
