COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The UNM Alumni Association will host its annual Veterans Day Celebration and Remembrance at the UNM Alumni Memorial Chapel on Nov. 11 at 10 a.m., with remarks from UNM President Garnett S. Stokes and a keynote by retired Army Colonel Jim R. Keene — an Albuquerque native with 31 years in the Army Bands Program. The program will include the UNM ROTC Color Guard, bugle and organ music, a live national anthem, and a commemorative pin with a reception afterward.  University of New Mexico

BUSINESS NEWS

  • NM Tech Talks will host its first software hackathon to bring local deep-tech startups together with experts from national labs and universities in Albuquerque. Organizers hope the event will boost innovation and spark new projects in the local tech scene—drawing more talent and ideas to the community.  Albuquerque Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • Santa Fe poet Arthur Sze was named the 25th US Poet Laureate on Sept. 15 and began his term on Oct. 9—he will serve for a year and plans to release his translation anthology Transient Worlds on April 30.  The Paper.
  • Last week, a Halloween-themed poetry slam called Slambrosia took place at Ambrosia on Lomas—just outside the International District—where top local poets competed over three rounds and earned bonus points for spooky performances. Local poet Lizzie Waltner organized the event, and a free spooky writing workshop by Katrina Kay helped young writers join Albuquerque’s vibrant poetry scene.  The Paper.

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Office of the University Secretary is asking local volunteers to help with UNM's fall commencement ceremonies. Graduate students will celebrate on Dec 11th at 6 p.m. at University Arena and undergraduates will gather on Dec 12th at 6 p.m. — sign-ups close on Dec 2nd at 2 p.m. for undergrads and Dec 3rd at 4 p.m.  University of New Mexico

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Heritage Farm at Albuquerque BioPark will reopen Tuesday on Earth Day after two years of renovations to boost agriculture education and connect visitors to local farming traditions—at the Farm and Ranch Museum a young loblolly pine grown from a seed that orbited the moon now stands nearly three feet tall. This update highlights local agriculture and its blend with science in our community.  Albuquerque Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • KOAT health expert Dr. Ash said a World Health Organization report showed over 100 million people worldwide use e-cigarettes — with 15 million of those users aged 13 to 15 and 90% of kids who vape using flavored products. He added that vaping, which has increased among young adults, can lead to nicotine addiction and harm brain development.  KOAT

  • Today, the new-look Lobos are set for their season opener against East Texas A&M at the Pit—this game shows the underdog mindset as a smaller school challenges a bigger opponent in November college basketball.  Albuquerque Journal
