CULTURE NEWS

  • Instituto Cervantes of Albuquerque will host the 13th annual ¡Cine Magnífico! Spanish-language film festival from Nov. 7 to 9 at Bank of America Theatre—kicking off with Una Quinta Portuguesa at 7 p.m.—while West End Productions will show the Irish drama Translations at North Fourth Art Space on Nov. 7. Ballet Folkórico Fiesta Mexicana will honor Maestro Miguel Caro Zaragoza with a tribute dance on Nov. 8 at South Broadway Cultural Center.  The Paper.
  • Keshet Dance Company will preview its fourth Movement for Mercy production at the Keshet Center for the Arts on Nov. 7-8 at 7:00 p.m. The performance draws on choreography and stories from youth dance classes in juvenile detention centers + features a Q&A to discuss juvenile reform and support for incarcerated youth.  The Paper.
  • Manuel González was named New Mexico’s poet laureate on November 5th—he will serve a three-year term and launch Voces de la Tierra, a digital archive to share local poetry. The longtime educator has brought poetry into classrooms for healing and now plans to engage communities across the state.  The Paper.

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The LoboBites finals will take place on November 13 at SUB Ballroom C—graduate students will compete with a three-minute research slide for a chance to win up to $1,000 in scholarship prizes. The event will feature a 4 p.m. competition, a 5 p.m. reception, and 5:30 p.m. awards along with free food and drinks, a vote for the People's Choice Award, and remarks from UNM President Stokes and Vice President Fisher, with neuroscientist Poppy Crum as guest judge.  University of New Mexico
  • UNM-Valencia faculty member Dr. Tammi Duncan-Teller received the 2025 Two-Year College Biology Teacher Award from the National Association of Biology Teachers on Nov. 1 — the honor came with an NABT membership, an award plaque, and a $500 honorarium. The award recognized her innovative, hands-on approach to teaching biology that built student confidence from course start to finish.  University of New Mexico

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller got 36% of the vote in a seven-candidate race and now faces a runoff with former Bernalillo County Sheriff Darren White—low donor spending kept funds low in the contest.  New Mexico In Depth

SPORTS NEWS

  • The UNM Lobos defeated East Texas A&M in their home opener at the Pit (delivering a dominant performance) and the win set a promising tone for the season (with the team showing strong offense throughout).  Albuquerque Journal
  • Heather Dyche, head coach of UNM women's soccer for 11 seasons, announced she will leave to coach the U.S. Under 23 Women's National Team. She led the team to four Mountain West regular-season titles + two NCAA Tournament appearances.  KOAT
  • The UNM Lobos, led by new coach Eric Olen, won their home opener by defeating the Lions—marking the start of his era at UNM.  Albuquerque Journal
