COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Moe, the longtime Nile hippo at ABQ BioPark, died at 52 on Sunday after a severe dental infection led vets to choose euthanasia—he had been a gentle giant and devoted father to four calves, including Maisy born on Oct. 14. The park noted that Moe spent over two decades raising awareness for his vulnerable species.  KOAT

CULTURE NEWS

  • Albuquerque’s award-winning indie folk band Bébé La La will celebrate 15 years with a special anniversary show at the Outpost Performance Space on November 15 — the show will feature guest musicians and offer exclusive anniversary memorabilia while the band plans to record three new songs in early December.  The Paper.
  • At this year's Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, Cochiti Pueblo artist Virgil Ortiz unveiled his bold design, Revolt Rising—featuring characters from the Pueblo Revolt of 1680 that bring a piece of our history to the sky. Bad weather kept the balloon grounded, and the team plans to launch it fully this winter while Ortiz's work will be on display at Gallery Hozho on Nov. 22 from 3-6 p.m.  KOAT

ECONOMY NEWS

  • For 41 days, the government shutdown has caused payment delays, furloughs and hurt local small businesses in New Mexico. The Senate is set to finalize a funding law today—extending government operations through January to help ease the economic pain.  KOAT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UNM’s Southwest Hispanic Research Institute will host La Casita: A Conversation About How We Got Here—a brown bag lecture from 12–1:15 p.m. on Nov. 12—at its SHRI/CCS Casita at 1829 Sigma Chi Road, N.E., where José A. Rivera will lead discussions with Economics Professor Richard Santos and Sociology Professor Felipe B. Gonzales to explore the institute’s history and its role in shaping academic and cultural space; light refreshments will be provided.  University of New Mexico

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Richard Hodgson and his family, who run a ranch with 200 cow-calf pairs on 5,600 acres, have long balanced cattle work with oil operations until recent actions by Hilcorp upset that balance. A Hilcorp truck disrupted an elk hunt and a rainstorm spread spills over a well pad, and the Hodgsons say they will demand more careful cleanup and respect for their land.  Source NM
  • Eight lakes in New Mexico were closed due to toxic algae blooms, and Quemado Lake was shut down—Gila National Forest issued this safety measure after high levels of microcystins were found that threaten both humans and animals; the Environment Department will continue testing until the water is declared safe.  KOAT
  • Game and Fish relocated a male Mexican wolf 3065 after capturing it north of Interstate 40 with a helicopter on Friday, Nov. 7. The wolf was returned to the Mexican Wolf Experimental Population Area in the Gila National Forest — the move followed US Fish and Wildlife Service permit guidelines amid concerns of potential risks.  KOAT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Jemez Pueblo received a state award for its broadband project linking 670 underserved households and businesses during the New Mexico Infrastructure Finance Conference* the $15 million initiative, which includes 45 miles of fiber and has connected over 40 homes so far, is set to complete in 2026.  Sandoval Signpost
  • MRCOG is seeking public input through an online survey to update the economic development strategy for central New Mexico. The survey is open until Nov. 14 and asks residents, business leaders and tribal members to share their views on housing, roads, health care and education — this input will guide future federal funding decisions.  KUNM

HEALTH NEWS

  • New Mexico’s Health Care Affordability Fund will use state money to keep insurance premiums steady as federal subsidies may not be extended; Alex Sanchez from BeWell said the fund will fill the gap and urged residents to check their coverage options at the Jefferson Street office.  KOAT

SPORTS NEWS

  • New Mexico United announced a bus trip that will take fans from Sandia Hotel and Casino to the Western Conference Final in their debut appearance, with the bus leaving at 9 a.m. Friday, Nov. 14 and returning at 10 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 16—ticket cost is $175 and includes United merchandise and refreshments.  KOAT
  • On Sunday, Nov. 9, the UNM women’s basketball team beat the Aggies 71-64 at the Pit by using strong defense and key plays, with Destinee Hooks scoring 20 points and Nayli Padilla adding 15 that included two back-to-back three pointers—propelling the Lobos ahead.  New Mexico Daily Lobo
