COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Albuquerque restaurants offered free and discounted meals to veterans yesterday to honor their service on Veterans Day — many local chains such as Scooter’s Coffee and Round Table Pizza participated in the celebration.  KOAT
  • El Patron in Albuquerque served free meals to veterans on Veterans Day— a tradition started 20 years ago by owners Nadine and Jimmy that included heartfelt tributes, a set table in memory of lost service members, and free lap robes from veteran John Baerman. The restaurant served over 1,000 meals last year and aimed to exceed that number this time.  KOAT
  • The UNM Health Sciences Office for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion is hosting a community potluck on Tuesday, Nov. 18 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the front lawn of the Health Sciences Library and Informatics Center—students, faculty and staff must register their dish by Nov. 17.  University of New Mexico

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Local entrepreneurs Miguel Rodriguez and Dipo Alam are holding a soft opening for DiverCity—the revamped Nuevo Atrisco Food Park—on Friday, Nov. 21, designed to welcome legacy food trucks and offer family-friendly events in the South Valley. The project aims to rebuild community trust after the previous park closed in July 2024 by giving vendors two weeks of free parking as a start.  The Paper.

CULTURE NEWS

  • Alicia Romero was named head curator at the Albuquerque Museum in early November and she brings a community focus and strong team support to her new role (she is cataloguing the museum’s collection to better reflect local history and invite everyday visitors).  The Paper.
  • FUSION Theatre Company’s production of One Flea Spare by Naomi Wallace opens tomorrow in Albuquerque with shows running through November 23 and then traveling to Taos Center for the Arts on November 29 and 30. The play, set during London's 1665 plague, explores themes of inequality—directed by Laurie Thomas.  The Paper.

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UNM associate professor Sarah Hernandez (Sicangu Lakota) was awarded a $150,000 grant from the Henry Luce Foundation’s Indigenous Knowledge Initiative to publish an anthology of Dakota, Nakota, and Lakota literature. She will lead the two-year project with the Oceti Sakowin Writers Society to support research, podcast production, and educational materials that preserve native storytelling traditions.  University of New Mexico

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Today in Albuquerque, record-challenging heat produced highs in the 60s while some areas in New Mexico reached the 70s. Forecasters say a storm system will bring wind, rain and snow to north and west parts by Sunday—cooler conditions are expected next week.  KOAT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Crews will work on Bridge Boulevard between La Vega Drive and Young Avenue for the next three weeks to update sidewalks and ramps to meet ADA standards – the project includes repaving the road, painting bike lanes and installing new lighting while keeping all businesses open and accessible.  KOAT
