COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The 36th annual KOATs for Kids donation drive is now collecting new coats for school-aged children and will run until November 23rd—on November 21, a live drive will be held at three Walmart locations in Albuquerque and Santa Fe from 6:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. to pick up the coats for delivery to school districts.  KOAT

CULTURE NEWS

  • During World War II, Navajo code talkers used their unique language to send secret messages that saved lives in the Pacific by replacing intercepted English communications—29 Native Americans created code words such as 'zinc' for the letter Z. Peter MacDonald Sr., 97, joined the Marines at 15 and, along with fellow veteran Thomas H. Begay, now works to preserve this vital legacy.  KOAT

  • In the Class 5A state football semifinals played Saturday, seeded favorites mostly won their playoff games+ a few matchups did not follow the seed line predictions.  Albuquerque Journal
  • New Mexico used a strong defense to secure a 20-17 win over Colorado State on Saturday at University Stadium before a crowd of 27,526 fans.  Albuquerque Journal
  • New Mexico State beat UNM for a second Rio Grande Rivalry win as coach Jason Hooten led his team through a tough game in front of a hostile Aggie crowd — the contest showed the rivalry remains fierce.  Albuquerque Journal
