COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Cynthia Serna has led the Revitalize San Pedro Partnership as board president since fall 2023 to help the local commercial corridor thrive by hosting business gatherings that connect shops and government officials. The group works with New Mexico Main Street—improving storefronts and inviting community volunteers to join local projects. The Paper.
- ➤ Maralyn Beck founded New Mexico Child First Network in 2019 to support kids in foster care and their caregivers with trauma-informed training and mentorship. On Dec. 6, the network will host a foster and adoptive family night at Explora Science Center — inviting families to celebrate the season with a special visit from Santa. The Paper.
- ➤ Today The Paper published its annual Heroes & Helpers issue that profiles local volunteers serving community organizations; the issue features nominations from officials including Mayor Tim Keller who recognized 16-year-old Lillianna Henley for her work in libraries and community centers. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Shannon Barnhill has been APS Education Foundation's executive director for nine years and has worked 11 years at the nonprofit that gives funds and resources to APS schools to support hands-on learning programs (including over $500,000 in grants for initiatives like the Mariachi Herencia music program, STEM projects, and FFA activities). Her work has led to higher student attendance and improved test scores at local schools. The Paper.
- ➤ State Higher Education Secretary Stephanie Rodriguez warned Friday that new restrictions on student aid and over $120 million in federal funding cuts are expected to weaken New Mexico colleges and universities next year—she noted that the changes, part of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act and recent federal policies, could force graduate students to rely on higher interest private loans and lower enrollment rates. This measure is projected to put extra pressure on academic budgets across the state. Sandoval Signpost
