EDUCATION NEWS

  • UNM will host an information session today from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Honors College Forum where current MMUF fellows will share details on the two-year Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship that offers research support, financial aid, mentoring, and workshops; the program accepts up to five new fellows each year and full-time students with a 3.5 GPA who plan to pursue a Ph.D. in eligible fields can apply until Jan. 9, 2026 (undocumented students may apply as well).  University of New Mexico
  • The UNM Foundation announced today that a new facility will be named the Velarde Center for Philanthropy — approved by the UNM Board of Regents and enabled by a $5 million lead gift from alumnus Randy Velarde. The three-story center at Yale Boulevard and Lomas Boulevard will house foundation operations and promote philanthropy, with construction set to start this winter and an opening expected mid to late summer 2027.  University of New Mexico

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Researchers from the World Wildlife Fund, Sustainable Waters and university partners released a study showing only 48% of water in the Rio Grande basin is naturally replenished, putting drinking water and irrigation for 15 million people and nearly 2 million acres at risk. The report warns that without rapid action on both sides of the border cities, farms and the natural environment may face severe shortages — urging policymakers to rethink water use.  Albuquerque Journal
  • Climate models predict New Mexico will lose much of its water in the coming decades and large migratory birds like sandhill cranes and Ross’s geese may shift their routes—experts warn that a 67%–80% drop in January snowpack and a 25% fall in river flows will shrink wetlands used by these birds.  KUNM

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Albuquerque officials are preparing for winter weather by showing off their snow removal tools — they have 42 trucks, 72 snowplows, and new brine trucks ready to keep the city moving if storms hit soon. They warned that bus routes, trash pickup, and other services may be delayed and urged everyone to drive carefully.  KOAT

HEALTH NEWS

  • A new report shows that nearly every rural county in New Mexico faces a shortage of doctors and nurses with 27 of 33 counties lacking enough health care professionals. State lawmakers will study issues like medical malpractice laws during a 30-day legislative session in January — experts say no single fix can solve the problem.  New Mexico In Depth
