- ➤ Albuquerque Community Safety began its third year providing Emergency Overnight Shelter Transportation from November 1 through March 31 to help people without safe shelter during freezing nights. The service runs nightly from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m.—offering rides for unsheltered individuals and support for mental health and quality-of-life crises. KUNM
- ➤ A new mapping report showed that rural areas in New Mexico have few local news outlets while Albuquerque hosts more than 30 that serve statewide audiences—researchers noted that limited resources and slow digital innovation have left many communities without the trusted local news they need and suggested that state support could help bridge the gap. - ➤ Albuquerque atmospheric metal band Distances plays loud music with heavy guitar riffs and prepares to perform at Desert Dogs in Santa Fe on Feb. 18th with Palehorse/Palerider and Coma Recovery. The band self-produces its recordings and merchandise—adding new material for an upcoming release. The Paper.

- ➤ New Mexico’s universal childcare program started on November 1, offering optional enrollment for families and licensed private providers while funding reimburses providers. The program faces capacity challenges in towns outside Albuquerque—where fewer spots are available—and sustainability concerns due to high costs per child and reliance on state and federal funds. - ➤ UNM student researchers shared language projects at the Indigenous Language Institute Symposium held recently at Sandia Resort and Casino—showing work on Indigenous signed languages and studies on Amazon words.
