Good morning, Albuquerque. Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 2nd of December.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today on Giving Tuesday, UNM Gives coordinators are urging local residents to donate to UWNCNM through a portal that remains open until Dec.15. Donors can direct their gifts to any eligible nonprofit to help fund essential community services.  University of New Mexico

CULTURE NEWS

  • Trey Gunn and David Forlano will host an album release show for their new record Select Habits of Invertebrates at FUSION | 708 on Dec. 6 — fans will see live music with surround sound and video art and enjoy an opening set by Chris Meyer’s Alias Zone.  The Paper.
  • Albuquerque celebrates the season with holiday light displays as Chris McCord transforms his home at 6401 Pepperdine Street NE with over 50,000 lights and music while collecting toy and food donations. The ABQ BioPark hosts the River of Lights along a 1.6-mile route featuring 700 displays — drawing families to enjoy the festive atmosphere.  KOAT

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Starting mid-November, the flooded fields along the Rio Grande have drawn thousands of migratory birds to Albuquerque's bosque, including Sandhill cranes and Canadian geese. Scientists say that lower water levels—due to reduced snowpack—have left once full ponds cracked and may force birds to avoid the area in coming decades.  New Mexico Daily Lobo

SPORTS NEWS

  • UNM extended head coach Jason Eck’s contract for five years to keep him through the 2030 season, but a buyout clause of $4 million applies if another school hires him before the end of 2026—his contract includes reduced buyout amounts of $2 million in 2027, $750,000 in 2028, $500,000 in 2029, and $300,000 in the final season. UNM has seen similar moves before in its sports programs and may still explore options for a new coach this decade.  KOAT
