Good morning, Albuquerque. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 4th of December.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Albuquerque Fire Rescue urged residents today to set up Christmas decorations safely, warning that dry trees and faulty lighting cause 160 structure fires per year. Residents should water live trees daily, inspect lights, and keep trees three feet away from heat sources (including HVAC and fireplaces) to prevent fire hazards.  KOAT

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Maxwell Museum’s Hibben Center now serves as a community hub, hosting weekly Native American drum practices by local group Shield Chief every Wednesday. The facility also supports archaeological research and public events, offering a welcoming space for local families and students.  University of New Mexico
  • Albuquerque launches the holiday season with the 30th Nob Hill Shop and Stroll running today from 5 to 9 p.m. on Central Ave; the River of Lights brightens ABQ BioPark Botanic Garden nightly through Dec. 30 and the 19th 12×12 Fundraising Exhibitions opens at Harwood Art Center on Dec. 5.  The Paper.

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UNM has launched Campus Watch to boost campus safety by dividing campus into 23 zones and assigning building coordinators to work with safety teams. The initiative urges Lobos to report concerns early (community policing effort) so issues are addressed promptly.  University of New Mexico

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A winter storm is slowing roads as NMDOT crews work around the clock, with snow falling in the East Mountains since Wednesday afternoon and conditions remaining slick today. Drivers are urged to keep a safe distance from plows while checking NM Roads for updates (511 available for real-time info).  KOAT
  • Albuquerque's Solid Waste Management Department is extending free fall curbside green waste collection until Friday, Dec. 12 so residents can dispose yard debris on their normal pickup day. Residents must follow guidelines (trash bags for most items; unbagged branches cut into 4‑ft lengths) and set items curbside by 7 a.m.  KOAT
  • The New Mexico Environment Department lifted algae bloom advisories for five lakes after water conditions improved. Advisories for Eagle Nest, Maloya, Lower Charette, Snow, and Hopewell lakes, issued in September and October, no longer apply, though visitors are advised to treat untreated surface water with care.  KOAT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Southwestern Public Service Company requested that New Mexico exempt two proposed gas-fired power plants from the Energy Transition Act’s zero-carbon rule to keep rates stable. The application (including a Gaines County plant near Hobbs with a 40-year life and a Dec. 10 decision) has drawn greenwashing criticism from environmental groups.  KUNM

HEALTH NEWS

  • After the 2022 Hermits Peak-Calf Canyon Fire, officials are testing over 900 wells for dangerous metals found after nearly 2,500 fire retardant drops in the burn scar; state and local agencies are providing bottled water and asking witnesses to share evidence — all to protect public health.  Source NM
