  • Arlene Espinoza-Armijo launched a Giving Tree project at Michael Thomas Coffee in Nob Hill and Heart & Sole Sports on San Mateo to support children in need from four local schools; community members can select a tag and return unwrapped gifts in a gift bag by Dec. 17.  KUNM

CULTURE NEWS

  • Artist Molly Mendenhall from Los Lunas will create a Route 66-themed mural in the New Mexico History Museum lobby in Santa Fe this fall — the work celebrates the centennial of Route 66 and must be completed by New Year’s Day.  The Paper.
  • Albuquerque hosts three festive events this week: The Klezmatics perform Happy Joyous Hanukkah on Thursday, Dec. 11 at FUSION, Noise For Toys holds an EDM toy drive on Saturday, Dec. 13 at JUNO brewery + cafe + art, and NHCC presents its Luminito Celebration on Sunday, Dec. 14.  The Paper.
  • Opera Southwest stages The Farolitos of Christmas at National Hispanic Cultural Center from Dec. 12 to Dec. 14 with shows on Dec. 12 at 6:30 p.m., Dec. 13 at 2 & 6 p.m., and Dec. 14 at 4 p.m. The opera reimagines Rudolfo Anaya’s cherished tale for a festive tradition.  The Paper.

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Ed Manzanares joined the Institutional Support Services Vice President's Office as a strategy associate on Dec. 1 to support capital planning and align campus priorities. He will monitor initiative progress and improve internal processes for UNM.  University of New Mexico
  • On Dec. 5, during UNM’s annual Hanging of the Greens, United Graduate Workers of UNM handed out petitions outside the bookstore to urge the law school to reinstate 10-hour workweeks for law students so they can keep health insurance + campaigners said the new guidelines limit most working hours to six or eight hours.  New Mexico Daily Lobo
  • X E Oaks, a cartoonist and paper deliverer at UNM, balanced creative work with early-morning routes and remote classes from Scotland and is set to graduate this Fall. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Ghost Ranch will protect 6,000 acres as part of a new conservation plan that will keep the sweeping vistas off-limits to development + preserve the land that inspired Georgia O’Keeffe.  Albuquerque Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • Albuquerque families should check online toy listings carefully during holiday shopping as experts warn that counterfeit products may bypass safety tests (including proper age labeling and secure packaging) and expose kids to harmful chemicals or choking hazards.  KOAT
  • UNM will expand its street medicine program after receiving a $2.5 million grant from the Health Resource and Services Administration. Medical residents will train with mobile teams in Albuquerque and Shiprock to deliver care to vulnerable patients.  KUNM

  • Diego Pavia, an Albuquerque native who set a school record with 3,192 passing yards at Vanderbilt, was named one of four Heisman finalists on Monday and will join the award ceremony in New York on Saturday.  Albuquerque Journal
