ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Residents in southern New Mexico felt tremors from three small quakes that shook an area 40 miles south of Whites City on Dec. 25 between 11:26 and 11:50 a.m., according to the US Geological Survey.  KOAT
  • Since 2021, researchers confirmed 13 firefly occurrences as some reports of dancing lights turned out to be high-tech laser displays—project director Anna Walker collects specimens for the Museum of Southwestern Biology and tracks sightings to reveal new species amid environmental challenges.  Source NM
  • Albuquerque hit a record 64 degrees on Christmas (breaking the 63-degree mark from 1955) as locals enjoyed an unusually warm day; forecasts call for cooler weather and light mountain snow later this weekend.  Albuquerque Journal
  • On Dec. 19, ABQ BioPark welcomed nine endangered Mexican gray wolves into a new $4 million conservation facility, financed partly with Game and Fish funds ($400,000), to aid wolf recovery. The 4.5-acre facility was completed in November and remains closed to the public to protect the animals.  Albuquerque Journal

  • The city unveiled a new $750,000 Portland Loo at Civic Plaza near Fourth and Tijeras on Monday. The single-stall restroom features blue lighting to deter drug use + accessible amenities for families and workers; officials plan to install another unit near the Alvarado Transportation Center by next spring.  Albuquerque Journal
