- ➤ On April 1, UNM held a campus tree celebration for Earth Month with speakers, live music, a seed-swap, tree-shaped cookies and a live tree-planting demonstration. - ➤ Labor activist Dolores Huerta attended the Hands Off! protest on Saturday in Albuquerque and urged people to speak out and boycott companies that support cuts to government jobs. Huerta, who co-founded the United Farmworkers with César Chávez and is from Dawson, compared the protest to large rallies in the past — saying that ongoing protests are needed to protect democracy. - ➤ UNM will demolish the Motel 6 within the next two weeks after buying it for $5M and approved a $1.25M offer for a nearby 1-acre lot by Lobo Village. The demolition comes after reports of crime, vandalism, and meth production, and the university plans mixed-use commercial development—further decisions will depend on market demand—while working with local agencies to improve security.
